About

Ian Humberstone is a musician and writer based in Edinburgh, UK.

His music career began in his teens, touring the DIY circuit in Europe and North America. Since then he has released over a dozen albums through independent labels and crowdfunding. (In print records are available directly through the products page.) His music has been played on BBC Radio 1, 2, 3, and 6; and performed at arts institutions such as the Arnolfini Gallery, Celtic Connections, and the Scottish Storytelling Centre.

Ian has an academic background in ethnography and writes on topics relating to traditional culture. He completed his PhD in 2023 with a thesis examining the use of ritual language by Shetland fishers. These interests sometimes inform his creative process. In this connection, he is the co-founder of the celebrated research-led record label Folklore Tapes.

He is often available for commissions in Scotland and the wider UK, and remote session work internationally via his well-equiped home studio. Please feel free to get in touch via the 'contact' page above if you have an idea for a project, or just to say hello.
